SUMMARY:Blood\, Gold and Oil. The play by Jan Woolf
DESCRIPTION:A updated version fo the play is presented at the Riverside Studios Hampstead. 10th to 13th July 2023 \nBook your tickets at the Theatre website \nFrom the Arab Revolt of World War One\, a modern hero is constructed: The brilliant\, flawed figure of Lawrence of Arabia. His legacy is as complex as his psyche. \nA museum. Present day. A curator puts the finishing touches to her final exhibition while its subject – seemingly summoned by the passion of the archaeologist – searches for a way out. \nProduced for the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq\, BLOOD GOLD AND OIL scrapes away at the topsoil of TE Lawrence’s continued celebrity and interrogates all that lies beneath. Was he a brilliant military commander? Certainly. A Freedom fighter? He’d definitely like to think so. An agent of British colonialism? Could be. \nDuring the course of the play\, a real living exhibition is carefully pieced together with an array of genuine World War One artefacts on loan from the National Civil War Centre in Newark and Imperial War Museum. The finds were from a 2013 archaeological dig in Jordan where playwright Jan Woolf was a writer in residence and dug the play out of the ground.

SUMMARY:Writing Lawrence and his World - a One day conference at Magdalen College\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:The soldier\, archaeologist and writer T.E. Lawrence\, also known as Lawrence of Arabia\, is one of the most elusive and controversial figures of the twentieth-century and also one of the most studied. \nHe has intrigued generations of biographers and interpreters from his contemporaries in the 1930s to students re-analysing his role in the Middle East one hundred years later. In 1989\, Jeremy Wilson produced a monumental authorised biography of Lawrence that was based on unprecedented access to official records and personal letters\, and proved to be a landmark in Lawrence biography. To celebrate the cataloguing of Wilson’s extensive archive\, we are bringing a range of speakers who have approached Lawrence from a variety of different perspectives\, professions and genres. \nThis conference will explore conflicts and controversies in the history of Lawrence biography\, approach Lawrence from the view of the indexer\, the bookseller and the archivist\, find out how some of the latest major biographies of Lawrence were written\, delve into some intriguing new stories in Lawrence research\, explore Lawrence in parallel with the stories of his friends and contemporaries\, and discover how Lawrence is transformed and re-interpreted in fiction and art. \nThe keynote speaker will be Sabina Murray\, award-winning novelist and screenwriter\, who will tell us about researching and writing her new bio-fictive novel about T.E. Lawrence\, using the Wilson Archive at Magdalen. The conference will take place on 31 August 2023 at Magdalen College. See below for the full programme. \nAll are welcome and the conference is completely free. \nThose wishing to attend the conference should complete the registration form here \n\nThe conference will now be broadcast online for free. Next to the cemetery are the beautiful Walled Gardens (free entry)\, with its Dovecote Café\, where teas\, cakes and light lunches can be purchased. The Café has on display the bier (hand cart) used during Lawrence’s funeral. Each of these places is open every day. Wareham Town Museum\, in East Street\, houses a small display on Lawrence. The Museum has free entry\, and will be open on Friday and Saturday (10:00am to 4:00pm). \nMax Gate\, Thomas and Florence Hardy’s home that was visited many times by Lawrence\, and Hardy’s Cottage\, where Thomas Hardy grew up\, are both National Trust properties near Dorchester. Max Gate will be open on Saturday and Sunday\, 10:30am to 4:30pm (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/dorset/max-gate)\, and Hardy’s Cottage on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday\, 10:00am to 4:00pm (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/dorset/hardys-cottage). Dorchester is a ten-mile drive from the Tank Museum. \nAlso nearby are Corfe Castle\, where Lawrence says he liked to get breakfast on Sunday mornings\, Swanage\, where Sarah and Bob Lawrence had a number of holidays in the 1950s and 1960s\, and Lulworth\, the beautiful cove with many tourist attractions. \nFor a gentle walk of about a mile each way one can reach Arish Mell\, a small bay where Lawrence liked to swim in the sea\, from the village of East Lulworth through the Lulworth Army Range Walks\, which are open to the public at weekends. (A more strenuous route can also be taken from Lulworth Cove. It is about three miles each way\, but includes some very steep hills!) \nBooking \nFurther details\, with booking and payment arrangements can be found on the Society’s website. Details can also be requested by post from The T. E. Lawrence Society\, P.O. Box 728\, Oxford\, OX29ZJ. \nPlease book your places at the AGM by 31 August 2023\, with full payment of the delegate rate of £35.00 per person. \nIf you wish to take up the National Trust’s offer of free entry to Clouds Hill\, or to join us for an informal meal at The Frampton Arms on the Saturday evening\, please email Martin Gething at mgething@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Lawrence of Arabia Legacy Lecture Series: T. E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol
DESCRIPTION:On November 24\, 2024 at 2:00 PM CT (US time zone) John Johnson-Allen will offer the third program in the 2024 T. E. Lawrence Society series Lawrence of Arabia: Legacy Lectures hosted by the US National World War I Museum and Memorial. \nThe title of his presentation is T. E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol. \nDespite its integral role in the success of the 1916 Arab Revolt\, the British Royal Navy’s Red Sea Patrol is seldom mentioned in scholarship on T. E. Lawrence. Evidence demonstrates that without the work of those ships\, the revolt would have failed and Lawrence would have remained an obscure officer in the military bureaucracy of Cairo. \nDelve into the significance of this campaign with maritime historian and former Merchant Navy officer John Johnson-Allen\, author of “T.E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol: The Royal Navy’s Role in Creating the Legend.” \nThis program is free to Society and Museum members and the general public. To register for it please visit the Museum’s website link at: Lawrence Lecture Series: T. E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol (Nov. 2024) | National WWI Museum and Memorial (theworldwar.org)

SUMMARY:A Walk Around Laurence's Uxbridge
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 40 years of The T E Lawrence Society 1985 – 2025 \nA WALK AROUND LAWRENCE’S UXBRIDGE \nSATURDAY\, 2ND AUGUST 2025 \nThere are just a few places left for what will be a rewarding walk around Uxbridge in the footsteps of T E Lawrence\, but you must book please by Tuesday 15th July as we need to confirm numbers with the Battle of Britain Bunker and Museum. Please email Ian Heritage\, Hon. Secretary – details below. \nJoin us for a walk around Uxbridge town centre and the site of RAF Uxbridge\, on Saturday 2nd August\, to see some of the locations described by Lawrence in The Mint. \nThere have been many changes to the town since Lawrence was stationed there in 1922-1923 and RAF Uxbridge was demolished completely in 2010. However\, there is still enough surviving to make this an interesting and evocative visit. We will start in Uxbridge town centre at 11.00am and will visit St Margaret’s Church\, the sites of Vine Street railway station and the Eight Bells Pub\, the surviving RAF cinema building\, Hillingdon House and other remains of the original Depot. The walk will end at the Battle of Britain Bunker and museum and there will be an opportunity to visit these. The day is expected to end at 4.30-5.00pm. There is a cafe at the Bunker for lunch or people can bring their own and sit in the surrounding park. \nThe basic price is £15.00\, which includes admission to the Bunker & museum and a donation to St Margaret’s Church (concessions available for over-65s\, Defence\, Blue Light\, Students and Hillingdon residents). Please note that the WW2 Bunker & museum have no connection with Lawrence (the museum makes no mention at all of TE!) but this is a fascinating place to visit. It was from here that many of the key air operations of WW2 were conducted. The Bunker staff are going to see if they can dig out some Lawrence artefacts to show us. \nPlaces are limited to 20 people. If you wish to join the walk please email the Honorary Secretary hon.secretary@telsociety.org.uk providing answers to the following questions: \n1. Do you wish to visit to the Battle of Britain Bunker & Museum while you are on the walk? \n2. Do you qualify for any of the concessionary rates? \n3. Your mobile number in case of any sudden changes of plan (if no mobile then your landline). \n4. Your address. \nPlease reply by 15th July. You will then be given further information\, including joining details and how to pay. \nWe look forward to seeing you there.
