DESCRIPTION:Members may be interested in this new exhibition at the Great North Museum Hancock in Newcastle. This is the culmination of work done on the Gertrude Bell Archive at Newcastle University as outlined by Dr Mark Jackson at our 2018 Symposium \n\nOn display from 16th January – 5th March 2023\, Hall 1\, Great North Museum Hancock.Free entry.\nFor opening times please visit the Great North Museum website for more details.\n\nChallenging Legacies: The Kingdom of Iraq and Gertrude Bell will examine the events that led to the creation of the Kingdom of Iraq in 1921 and the role played by archaeologist and colonial administrator\, Gertrude Bell. Using original material and newly digitised photography from Bell’s UNESCO International Memory of the World archive\, held at Newcastle University\, the exhibition will reflect upon the impact of this historically significant period on the rich and diverse landscape of Iraq and the Middle East. \nThis exhibition has been made possible by generous funding from the Harry and Alice Stillman Family Foundation\, and the Catherine Cookson Foundation.

Lawrence always aspired to be a great writer. His 1926 published book “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” was an autobiographical account of his years in the Ottoman Empire during WWI – and is why many in the 21st century know him as Lawrence of Arabia.  Philip Neale explores whether Lawrence succeeded in his writing ambitions\, as well as the checkered history of “Seven Pillars” and the facets of Lawrence’s varied compositions.
